My Story
Jane Hwang is a full time Ceramics Artist and instructor in Salt Lake City, UT. Jane discovered her love for ceramics over a decade ago, and it has been her passion ever since. During her time outside of the Studio she enjoys riding motorcycles, traveling abroad, and rock climbing with friends. While holding a degree in Ceramics Jane Also has A bachelors in Nursing from the University of Utah and works part time as a pediatric Operating Room Nurse. Jane’s work often juxtaposes geometric lines and smooth shapes in her wheel thrown forms. She enjoys seeing the tension between opposites to create interesting visual and functional balance. While she prefers high atmospheric firings, she has been enjoying mid range oxidation glazes. Jane has also been exploring more sculptural work and has found a renewed love for hand building. In her sculptural work you can see her use of surface designs with carving and slips to create texture and movement in her work.
My Process
I work with a variety of clays but frequently use white clays as the glazes I use fit better and the colors are more vibrant. This allows me to make pieces that are food safe, highly functional and dishwasher, microwave and oven safe.
My Philosophy
I believe in creating functional art that can be used and cherished every day. There is something special about drinking your morning coffee from a handmade mug or serving dinner on a plate that was crafted with intention. I love knowing tha my pieces are being used and loved daily.
